Original M1905 bayonets were made with a 16" blade during WWI. Strategies changed when the WWII rolled around and military advisors required M1905 bayonets to be shortened to 10". When the war began, M1905 bayonets were cut down to the required 10", but as production ramped up, the M1905E1 (cut-down version) was produced at the required 10" and then designated the M1 bayonet. Interestingly, these were cut down even more to a length of 6.5". This is a utility fighting knife but still functional as a bayonet. Overall, this bayonet is in Fair - Good condition, considering its age and history. It has been cut-down. The press catch is functional with very stiff spring tension. The pommel and guard are securely fastened to the tang. They have scrapes and the finish has been parkerized. The escutcheon screw is securely fastened and it has light tool marks with a strong slot. Both serrated grip are broken and missing pieces. They are still securely fastened though. The remaining parts have compressions, draglines and the serrations are slightly worn. The coloring is still intact. The spine, sides and fullers have scrapes, oxidation and discoloration. This bayonet has been cut down from its original length. The blade's cutting edge has no nicks or dings and it appears to have its original factory edge. The tip is intact and comes to a sharp straight point. The finish has been parkerized and has turned a gray patina color. There are no visible markings. It was refinished and covered. The plastic scabbard is in Fair - Good condition, considering its age and history. The belt hook hanger is securely attached, rotates freely and mostly retains its original shape. The canvas frog loop is functional, has no rips or tears and the stitching is sewn tightly. It is gritty and is securely attached to the locket with rivets that have light oxidation. The retaining strap is functional and the snap has oxidized. The locket has scrapes and oxidation. The plastic bodies have scrapes and scratches. It is missing the tip, but the bayonet is far enough inside it doesn't show. Most of the finish remains. The front of the locket is hard to read, but the marking is "USM8A1/BM CO." and the back of the locket is numbered "106". This bayonet and scabbard will be a great addition to your M1 Garand rifle, or a bayonet collection in general. As with all used items, a light cleaning may be necessary to meet your standards.
