Description: This United States Navy Good Conduct Medal comes on its original ribbon and slot broach. The reverse of the planchet is officially stamped on three lines, "GEORGE/R./CARSON". The medal was issued posthumously to his next of kin.The medal comes with some Internet research and his complete Individual Deceased Personnel File (IDPF). Carson was born in LeSueur, Minnesota on October 7, 1940. He enlisted in the Navy on October 23, 1940 in Minneapolis. Upon completion of his basic training, he was assigned to the Battleship USS Maryland on April 6, 1941. According to everything that I can find, he was on the Maryland during the December 7th Pearl Harbor attack when the ship was damaged by Japanese bombs. He remained on the Battleship and saw extensive service with her in the Pacific War, first supporting the rest of the fleet at the Battle of Midway and then patrolling the Fiji Islands to guard against Japanese incursion. Next, he was on her when she went on the offensive, commencing shore bombardments in the Battle of Tarawa and later in the Battle of Kwajalein. During the Battle of Saipan he was present when the Maryland took torpedo damage to her bow, necessitating repairs and refits. During the repair and refit, then Chief Gunner’s Mate Carson was transferred to USN Base Hospital No. 8 in Pearl Harbor. He passed on August 2, 1944 with his cause of death being listed as, "War Gas HC gas chemical bronchitis pneumonia. Attached to USS Maryland." He was initially buried in Halawa Cemetery before his remains were shipped home and eventually interred in Fort Snelling. He was 23 years old.The medal is in excellent condition showing light storage age. Please check out the large photos I have posted and judge condition for yourself.
