ITEM DESCRIPTION: Here is an Absolutely Gorgeous & Mega-Ultra-Rare Vintage 1931 (not a more-modern reproduction) ‘Large Format’ Halftone Lithographic Print Depicting the Very Graphic & Vibrantly Illustrative Historical Scene of the Renowned Italian Explorer & Navigator, Christopher Columbus (1451-1506) Arriving Onshore in America with His Landing Party in 1492 Greeting The Native American Indians Who Are Welcoming Him, and His Three Famous Ships, The Nina, Pinta & Santa Maria Looming in the Harbor Behind Him, and aptly titled, “Landing of Columbus” (AKA “Coming to America”), after the original oil painting by the well-known listed historical & marine painter and illustrator, ‘William James Aylward’ (American, 1875-1956), whose printed signature, ‘W.J. Aylward’, appears lower right in the image area. The Print will certainly make the perfect addition to any Historical or W.J. Aylward art collection and will look beautiful all framed-up! Aylward’s original oil on canvas painting, 18” x 40”, of this scene sold at auction back in 2012 for $1700- with the title of “Coming to America”. Publisher & Print Info: The publisher of this particular print was the well-known United States Printing & Lithograph Co. [AKA U.S.P. & L. Co.] (American Printers & Publishers, 1891-1959). You can read the brief company bio below. The company’s Trademark circular logo with copyright in center & their circular initials around the copyright and inside the circle as, ‘The U.S.P & L. Co.’, appears printed very small in lower right in the image corner. The Print was published on February 15, 1931 by the U.S.P. & L. Co., and is on a very heavy-weight cream-colored wove paper stock. The inventory number and title, ‘110 – Landing of Columbus’, appears printed lower-left in the bottom outer margin area just beneath the image and the title also appears printed very large in the bottom outer margin area in center. The Meibohm family ordered/reordered this particular Print from the famous publisher, the Regal Art Co.’s inventory on 5/29/39, which is hand-written on verso in the upper right corner along with a few other internal notations that do not pertain to the Print itself (date is covered by archival tape). Size & Condition: The Print size with wide margins is 35” x 47”, Image size is 28” x 40”. The Print is in Excellent Rare+ condition for its vintage age with absolutely no color fade—gorgeous rich, vibrant color & tones! This Print has been tucked away in our archive amongst other prints & lithos since it was purchased by the Meibohm family and hasn’t seen the light of day in all this time—and is as good as any collector could hope to find in its original never-framed condition—simply beautiful and will look gorgeous all framed-up! There are a several small & completely negligible tears along the top outer margin edge and a few associated hard-creases too which are all repaired from behind with archival tape for strength & protection (none come anywhere close to the image area), as well as a few tiny & negligible paper-loss chunks missing along the top outer margin edge as well as a couple missing bits on the left & right outer margin edges and top outer margin corner tips missing too, and the top outer margin edge tears are as follows: 1-3/4” tear middle-left; Two 1/4” tears middle (near each other/part of a crease); 1-1/8” tear middle (part of a crease); 1-1/2” tear middle-right; 3/8” tear far-right; Three tears, 1”, 9/16” & 5/8” near each other far-right (near corner) with two that spider off a tiny missing chunk; and 1/8” & 1/4” dent-tears, right edge upper-right (near corner/part of an edge crease & paper-loss missing chunk)—all outer margin issues are completely negligible since the outer margins can easily be trimmed off or matted & framed out. Ultra-minimal very slight & small crescent-creases scattered here & there in the image area, which aren’t even really noticeable (except from behind) and aren’t worth mentioning. Other light & minimal creasing scattered here & there in the outer margin areas, along a few outer margin edges & outer margin corners with some associated dog-ear bends, as well as extremely minimal slight outer margin edge-wear with some dents & dings and some tiny bits missing (as previously mentioned) here & there—all of which are completely negligible as previously stated since the outer margins can easily be trimmed off or matted & framed out. Ultra-minimal smattering (maybe a handful or so) of very tiny & very faint foxing specks scattered here & there on the sheet which are hardly even noticeable in the outer margin areas, if you really-really hunt for them (none noticeable in the image area) and aren’t even worth mentioning either. Negligible toning of the stock from age which isn’t noticeable especially amidst the cream color of the paper stock itself. Extremely slight topical soiling (very lightly grubby) lightly noticeable here & there in the outer margin areas from age and also from being in a drawer this whole time amongst other prints and lithos (none noticeable in image area)—also negligible. This beautiful vintage print has never been framed which is always more desirable to collectors since it has never been exposed to older non-archival materials, matburn or lightfade. What a Beauty! Brief Publisher Biography: United States Printing & Lithograph Company [AKA U.S.P. & L. Co.] (American Printers & Publishers, 1891-1959) were prolific printers from the early 1890’s through the first half of the 20th Century. The United States Printing Company as it was first called, emerged from Russell Morgan and Company (1867-1891) in 1891 when the company changed their name. Through the 1890’s, the new company expanded their business and acquired several other printing companies which quickly made them one of the largest printing companies in the country. They continued until 1901 when they changed their name again to United States Lithograph Co., maintaining printing locations in Cincinnati, OH and also New York City. They eventually changed their name again in 1912 when they became incorporated under the name United States Printing & Lithograph Co. The company printed billboards, lithographs, theatrical & circus posters, advertising, fine art reproductions, calendars and war posters, maps etc, often for use in government offices & buildings, schools & educational systems and they also had their own fine arts department. They were also a major supplier of labels for the food and beverage industries, as wells as one of the premiere package manufacturers, display and magazine trade ads etc. They had multiple printing locations like Cincinnati, OH, Norwood, OH, New York City & Brooklyn, NY, San Francisco, CA, as well as others after merging or buying out other companies over the course of their long printing career. The U.S. P. & L. Co. operated up to 1959 when they merged with Diamond National Corp. on Sept. 28th of that year. Variations on their name include: United States Printing & Lithograph Co., United States Printing and Lithograph Company, United States Printing and Lithograph Co., United States Print. & Lithograph Co., U.S. Ptg. & Lithograph Co, U.S.P. & L. Co., and USP&L Co. EMAILING US: eBayers, at all costs, please use eBay's email system only (no outside email addresses) with any questions you may have. eBay's email system GUARANTEES we get your email and more importantly, that you get ours. A lot of servers in the last few years have started using newer SPAM filters, and there have been a lot of problems with GOOD emails not getting through correctly, and being returned as undeliverable. We have had numerous problems in the past communicating with our eBayers outside of eBay because of it. COLLECTORS & DEALERS: Please DO NOT email us (inside or outside of eBay's email system) with any offers to stop an auction early. It would not be fair to the rest of the eBay Worldwide community if we did that. THE HIGHEST BIDDER -OR- HIGHEST OFFER WINS IT!!!!! Thank you from the Staff at Meibohm Fine Arts, GOOD LUCK & HAPPY BIDDING!!!
