Description: Here's a rare vesta case, or match safe, by Whiting Mfg of North Attleboro, Massachusetts. It is made to be attached to a watch fob, necklace, or bracelet. The coin shaped case measures approximately 1 5/16" diameter and 1/4" thick. The little hinged "door" works properly and snaps open and closed nicely. Note the striker plate along one section of the edge. The edge is marked with a worn Whiting Mfg mark, Sterling, and the number 1621. I found a record of Whiting Mfg production numbers that showed 1621 would have been manufactured in 1884. The date seems quite appropriate for this particular item. The case is fashioned after a famous ancient Roman coin, the Syracuse Dekadrachm. The Syracuse Dekadrachm on one side has a charioteer, holding kentron in extended right hand and reins in left, driving a fast quadriga, Nike flying above. Below exergual line is a shield, greaves, cuirass, and crested helmet, connected by a horizontal spear. On the opposite side is the head of Arethousa facing left, wearing wreath of grain ears, triple-pendant earring, and pearl necklace; four dolphins swimming around. The piece exhibits light wear and tarnish. There is a small spot of heavy tarnish that needs attention by the hinge, on the horse side.
