The book is sold for the Benefit of the America Hostels for Refugees (with the Foyer Franco-Belge) and of the Children of Flanders Rescue Committee. [Introduction by Theodore Roosevelt] New York: [printed by D.B. Updike at the Merrymount Press for ] Charles Scribner's Sons, 1916. Quarto (12 3/4 x 9 3/4in; 322 x 245mm). [i-iv; i-]xxv[xxvi; 1-]155[156; i-iv]. Decorative additional title and 21 mounted plates (most coloured or tinted), 5pp. of facsimiles of autograph music. Largely uncut and unopened. (Very occasional light soiling or small marginal tears). In sheets, unbound, between the original oatmeal cloth-backed dark green paper-covered boards. (Spine darkened, endpapers toned and slightly chipped). Unique unbound, uncut and unopened copy of the limited edition: "Of this book, in addition to the regular edition, there have been printed and numbered one hundred and seventy-five copies deluxe, of larger format [all signed by Updike]. Numbers 1-50 on French hand-made paper ... Numbers 51-175 on Van Gelder paper." This copy on Van Gelder paper is numbered 65. The list of contributors reads like a roll-call of the artistic and literary great-and-the-good of the time, they include: Sarah Bernhardt, Laurence Binyon, Rupert Brooke, Jean Cocteau, Joseph Conrad ("Poland Revisited"), John Galsworthy, Thomas Hardy, Henry James, Alice Meynell, George Santayana, Igor Stravinsky, Edith Wharton and W. B.
