First published in 1836, this is the two volume 'Tacoma' edition. Bound in red buckram with an intricate gilt design on front covers, gilt to the top edge of the text block. Volume I includes fifteen black & white plate illustrations, Volume II includes thirteen black & white plate illustrations. The illustrations include drawings by R.F Zogbaum and C. Harry Eaton, engravings by S.P Davis, and E.C. Held, as well as engravings based on photos from 'Hunting Trips of a Ranch Hand' by Theodore Roosevelt. Each illustration is faced with a translucent tissue page, each tissue is intact. Each text page is bordered with a woodcut design. 6-3/8" X 8-7/8", 390 pages for each volume. No former ownership marks, no writing on the text pages. Gilt lettering and design elements are all intact and show very little wear or rubbing. Occasional age tanning spots to the edge of the text block, as well as to some of the edges of the illustration plates. The place holder ribbons are included, though they are no longer attached to the binding. Very sturdy boards and heavy weight stock, combined weight of the two volumes is more than 5-1/2 pounds. Sewn binding is entirely intact. This is not a library discard. This is the account of the Astor Expedition commissioned by John Jacob Astor, including the voyage of the Tonquin, and the explorations of Oregon by Wilson P. Hunt. The group of about 60 men became known as the Astorians, the first major party to cross to the Pacific after the Lewis and Clark Expedition. A beautiful set of this important work.
