After I informed Roslyn about the significance of the monument, she was genuinely amazed, and told me that she probably did not appraised it enough. She was genuinely funny. . . The History of the The Bronze Horseman Monument: Catherine the Great dedicated the monument to the founder of St Petersburg - Peter the Great. Peter the Great was the Ruler of Russia (1672–1725), he moved the capital from Moscow to the city that he created: St Petersburg. Sculptor of the Monument - Etienne Maurice Falconet (1716 –1791) - French sculptor, best-known for this equestrian statue of Peter the Great. The pedestal is a single piece of red granite named - the Thunder Stone. It took 18 months to transport the original 1,500-ton stone to its destination with a thousand of men involved. The pedestal looks like a cliff, with Peter the Great on top of it, facing the River. The statue became known as The Bronze Horseman by a narrative poem written by Aleksandr Pushkin.
