Size: 2” At the same time as the Lucky Elephant Coin Purse and Vanity Case was being promoted as a give-away, another case with an unusual design was also being promoted. This time the case was clearly manufactured by the Cleopatra Vanity Box Company and was based on the Samuel Davis patent, although it was fitted with a hinged top rather than having just a slip cover. But it was the design that makes this case notable. It was unmistakeably Art Nouveau in its styling but in achieving this artistic effect it produced an image of a woman’s head with a hairstyle suspiciously like elephant’s ears! It was probably not what was intended and as a result the case may not have been popular for that reason. The scarcity of examples of this case suggests that it was not produced in great numbers and the design was not used on any other Marinello case, apparently. Nonetheless, this image was used on other Marinello cosmetic containers – especially its face cream products - and persisted until the early 1920s. Thank you for your interest.
