The earrings fasten onto the ear using the Judith McCann-invented wingback. McCann came up with this design for women who didn't like the earring clasps of the time. Wingbacks have a t-bar that sits inside the ear above the lobe, with a long wire that curves up the back of the ear from the bottom to secure the earring. The design is intended to be more comfortable to wear than the screw and clip on types of earrings. Wingbacks were patented in the 1940s and each pair is signed 'Wingback Pat 2414382' (on the long wire). They are quite rare.
