Vintage DE SIMONE Italian Art Pottery "Puppeteer" Folk Line Design Plate

Description: VINTAGE “PUPPETEER” FOLK LINE DESIGN PLATE BY THE ITALIAN ARTIST GIOVANNI DE SIMONE (1930-1991) This vintage majolica illustrated art pottery plate, a folk line design with fantasy related to the Sicilian puppets, is by the acclaimed Italian artist Giovanni De Simone. The plate is individually hand painted with bright colors, signed and numbered on the bottom: DE SIMONE 64. The plate measures 9 5/8 inches in diameter and sits 1 3/8 inches high. CONDITION: The plate has tiny glaze chips on the rim edge, otherwise the plate is in very good vintage condition, with no cracks, no scratches, no crazing of the glaze or evidence of any repairs. De Simone was born in 1930 and studied at the School of Ceramics in Faenza, Italy. He worked from his studio in Palermo where he used oven firing to make the lead free colors permanent on his Majolica ceramics. His work is characterized by bright colors and his drawing style is often compared to Pablo Picasso’s. After his retirement in 1981 the factory was continued by his daughters Rosita, Susanna and Margherita.
