There is one place at the bottom of the spine where some of the cover surface has come off (see photos), and there is a place on the inside front cover where you can see where a name plate sticker used to be, but it is not very dark (see photos). There are a few places where there were small tears at the top or bottom edge of the page that have been very neatly taped with small pieces of clear tape (see photos). The pages have no tears with parts of any page missing and there are no marks at all in the book. The book is an Academy Classics for Junior High Schools book. Published by Allyn & Bacon. Abridged & edited by Mabel A. Bessey and Stella S. Center. Copyright 1927 by Allyn & Bacon. Set up and electrotyped by T. Morey & Son. Printed in the USA. Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle was a British writer, physician, sportsman, political activist, artist, legal advocate, Freemason, spiritualist, architectural designer, born on May 22, 1859, in Edinburgh, England. He is known for creating the character Sherlock Holmes and the Sherlock Holmes books, which were 4 novels and 56 short stories, and were milestones in the field of crime fiction. Doyle attended the University of Edinburgh Medical School. He also studied botany at the Royal Botanic Garden. He wrote detective fiction, fantasy, romance, humor, science fiction, historical novels, nonfiction, plays, and poetry. His first work with the character Sherlock Holmes was "A Study in Scarlet", published in Ward Lock & Co. on November 20, 1886. Doyle published works in Lippincott's Magazine, Strand Magazine, Chambers's Edinburgh Journal, British Medical Journal, Beeton's Christmas Annual, among others. In 1889, Doyle became a founding member of the Hampshire Society for Psychical Research. His well-known novel "The Hound of Baskervilles" was published in 1901. In the 1902 Coronation Honours Doyle was knighted by King Edward VII and given the rank of Knight Bachelor. Doyle was skilled and successful in several sports including football, cricket, rifle shooting, boxing, golf, billiards, and snow skiing. In 1903, Doyle founded The Crimes Club, a private social club whose purpose was discussion of crime and detection, criminals and criminology, and continues to this day as "Our Society". Arthur Conan Doyle published 258 fictions, 1091 articles & essays, 108 poems, 21 plays, 211 lectures, 106 interviews, 1045 letters, and 138 manuscripts. Adaptations of his works include over 1200 on screen, over 3000 on stage, over 1000 on radio, over 50 in comics, 84 video games, over 200 parodies, and over 1000 screen & stage performers. Arthur Conan Doyle died on July 7, 1930, in Crowborough, England.
