Description: USS Grayback SS-208 memorial lost submarine first day cover honoring this 307' Tambor Class diesel sub that was commissioned 30 June 1941 at Groton, CT. This submarine cover was pictorially postmarked from Washington, DC dated July 1, 2021. Color photo of actual sub on printed cachet #2733 by Alvin Eckert USCS #9964. See her web pages for the details of her design, construction and service record. The proud vessel sank after an attack by enemy aircraft south of Okinawa on 27 Feb 1944. All of the 60 crewmen were lost, but the proud vessel is on Eternal Patrol, and is a fine example of the contribution of the men of the Greatest Generation. Cover prepared on a 55 cent flag stamp and a 3 cent USN stamp from 1946. Seller has other submarine covers. Also, one other cover for this vessel. Check out my other items! These items make fine USN gifts when mounted on a colored matte and placed in a 5x7 picture frame. Free US Shipping!
