Description: Tournament of Shadows: The Great Game and the Race for Empire in Central Asia by Karl E. Meyer and Shareen Blair Brysac (1999) Editorial Reviews Product Description From the romantic conflicts of the Victorian Great Game to the war-torn history of the region in recent decades, Tournament of Shadows traces the struggle for control of Central Asia and Tibet from the 1830s to the present. The original Great Game, the clandestine struggle between Russia and Britain for mastery of Central Asia, has long been regarded as one of the greatest geopolitical conflicts in history. Many believed that control of the vast Eurasian heartland was the key to world dominion. The original Great Game ended with the Russian Revolution, but the geopolitical struggles in Central Asia continue to the present day. In this updated edition, the authors reflect on Central Asia's history since the end of the Russo-Afghan war, and particularly in the wake of 9/11. Review: Excellent! The best and most comprehensive Great Game book that I've read so far. It's very well written and fairly easy to read. Due to it's comprehensive coverage, it tied a lot of loose ends for me. A lot of characters that I had read about from other books are finally put into place in the grand scheme of things. At 631 pages including notes, this isn't for beginners but someone wanting a more indepth look. And for serious readers, this book is an excellent starting point for doing more serious research on the characters and events. Really, the only thing I had wished for was more maps, but I solved that by having an atlas next to me. A good buy. The book is in a good used condition. The dust cover have only general wear on. · Please be serious about your bids. Checkout must be completed within 7 days of the close of auction.
