Offset lithograph poster printed on 170g FSC-certified paper. Dimensions: 19.69" x 27.56" (50 x 70 cm) sheet. BRAND NEW (never framed or displayed). GREAT GIFT ITEM!!!The Darkroom was a never before shown treasure trove of Tom of Finland's images and gave a deeper insight into how his skillfully drawn super-macho men were created. Each drawing could consist of several references from several different photographs. The drawings show the men always full of confidence, and always ready, since Tom of Finland’s art, for him, wasn’t about problematizing, but about desire and the right to express it. Tom of Finland is celebrated internationally for his prolific and positive portrayal of confident gay men. His representational subjects are masculine, attractive, endowed with pronounced muscles and genitalia, and often dressed in uniforms or leather gear. His depictions of queer culture thoroughly challenged contemporary society, and solidified his place as one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century. 'Tom of Finland: Bold Journey' is currently on view at the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma, Helsinki, Finland, 4/28 - 10/29/2023. 'Tom of Finland: Pen and Ink 1965 – 1989' was recently on view at the David Kordansky Gallery, Los Angeles, CA (2021). In addition, 'Tom of Finland: The Darkroom' was recently on view at Fotografiska Tallinn, Estonia (2020). This exhibition was the first to focus on Tom’s photographs, in combination with his drawings, showing his artistic process. The Exhibition was produced by Fotografiska in collaboration with Tom of Finland Foundation on the occasion of the artist's birth 100 years ago.Touko Laaksonen, best known by his pseudonym Tom of Finland was a Finnish artist notable for his stylized homoerotic fetish art and his influence on late twentieth century gay culture. He has been called the "most influential creator of gay pornographic images" by cultural historian Joseph W. Slade. Over the course of four decades he produced some 3500 illustrations, mostly featuring men with exaggerated primary and secondary sex traits with tight or partially removed clothing. New York's Museum of Modern Art has acquired several examples of Laaksonen's artwork for its permanent collection. In 2006, MoMA in New York accepted five Tom of Finland drawings as part of a much larger gift from The Judith Rothschild Foundation. The trustee of The Judith Rothschild Foundation, Harvey S. Shipley Miller, said, “Tom of Finland is one of the five most influential artists of the twentieth century. As an artist he was superb, as an influence he was transcendent.” PLEASE SEE MY OTHER AUCTIONS BY CLICKING MYStoreICON ABOVEPay me securely with any major credit card through PayPal!
