Description: Hi! You're looking at an excellent condition book which is a classic history of the Union Army during the American Civil War written by BRUCE CATTON--the book is a collectible STATED FIRST EDITION published in the "Mainstream of America" series by Doubleday & Company, Inc. in 1956 and a HARDCOVER with the ORIGINAL DUSTJACKET. This book is in SUPERB condition and the book itself has a slight white scuff on the lower left of the front surface, a few tiny and slight age spots on the upper portion of the front surface and upper right of the back surface, a slight ding on the upper left portion of the back surface, a slight discolored spot on the lower spine tip, a tiny gift inscription and owner's name plate on the half title page, a tiny crease on the upper tip of p. 243 and just slight shelfwear and slight evidence of gentle browsing but no other significant flaws; the dustjacket has small tears on the upper spine edges, light dings and a couple of tiny tears on the spine tips, a few tiny tears and light abrasions on the opening edges of the covers, light dings and very small tears on the opening tips, a light discolored spot on the lower spine end, a tiny discolored spot on the lower right of the front inner flap and a clipped upper corner of the front inner flap, a few small tears on the upper and lower edges, a couple of small stray marks on the lower right of the back surface and just light shelfwear otherwise but no other significant flaws. The book is titled This Hallowed Ground: The Story of the Union Side of the Civil War and it was written by BRUCE CATTON; it was published by Doubleday & Company, Inc. in 1956 and is a STATED 1st EDITION copy.Covering events from the prelude of the conflict to the death of Lincoln, Catton blends a gripping narrative with deep, yet unassuming, scholarship to bring the war alive on the page in an almost novelistic way. It is this gift for narrative that led contemporary critics to compare this book to War and Peace, and call it a “modern Iliad.” Now over fifty years old, This Hallowed Ground remains one of the best-loved and admired general Civil War books: a perfect introduction to readers beginning their exploration of the conflict, as well as a thrilling analysis and reimagining of its events for experienced students of the war.A fantastic find, and a beautiful copy of this book! Thanks for looking, and good luck if you're bidding!
