Description: The Silmarillion, by J.R.R. Tolkien (1892-1973), edited and published posthumously by his son Christopher Tolkien in 1977. Rare 1st American Edition, true1st printing (stated on copyright page along with full 1-10 number sequence), Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston, manufactured in the United States. Hardcover with the original dust jacket, red sprayed top text block edge, green cloth cover boards with metallic gold/silver lettering/images. The fold-out "Map of Beleriand, and the Lands to the North" is attached to a page in the back of the book. This is an EX-LIBRARY book, with the library ink stamp at the top edge, the card pocket at the rear and adhesive holding the dust jacket to the book. I consider this collectible book to be in overall good vintage (ex-library) condition with the following noted flaws: There is a tiny (nearly indiscernable) puncture through the front cover board and mildly affecting the first few pages, minor age toning to the dust jacket and the pages with slight dinginess to the text block edges, a library stamp at the top red-dyed text block edge, library pocket affixed to the rear free endpaper, scuffing and light scratches to the Brodart dust jacket protector. The dust jacket appears to be affixed with adhesive to the inner boards and there is a small tear to the top of the front inner flap of the dust jacket and a small tear at the edge of the map that attaches to the book. The Brodart cover seems to have helped to preserve the dust jacket (and the book) based on the relatively minimal wear and tear.
