Anticipating ꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷꟷ There were a lot of unlikely souls seeking fame in the Los Angeles music scene in the late 70s and Martha Davis might have been the unlikeliest. Though she had played guitar since childhood. Davis wouldn’t take the stage until she was a twenty-year-old, single mother of two. It was the discovery of her late mother’s diaries and reading of her unfulfilled dreams of being a writer that served as the catalyst for Davis to join the Warfield Foxes. She debuted as their lead singer on Halloween in 1971, having been in the band for three days. Fast forward four years. The band had relocated to L.A., changed their name to The Motels (after briefly going by Angels Of Mercy), played legendary clubs like the Whisky and The Roxy, and were offered a record deal in 1977. ...which the band declined. Shortly thereafter, the band was no more. The age old band bugaboo of musical differences was cited as the reason. Davis reformed The Motels in 1978 with lead guitarist Jeff Jourard The two were joined by Jourard's saxophone/keyboardist brother Marty, bassist Michael Goodroe. and drummer Brain Glascock. A year later, the band, already a popular live act, signed a record deal with Capitol - the same label whose offer they had rejected. Chilly, even menacing at moments, The Motels' self-titled debut was released in 1979. Davis' lyrics were dark, evocative sketches of troubled relationships, dire circumstances and unraveling lives. Her sultry vocals could be seductive or unhinged but undeniably compelling. Critics took notice. Though tagged as a New Wave act, The Motels’ sound wasn’t so easily pigeonholed. The frenetic Kix was a guitar-driven track with tumbling percussion. The chugging Celia, a cautionary tale of a woman toying with the wrong man's affections, was sparse and unadorned. Despite the accolades from the music press, The Motels failed to generate much in the way of commercial success in the States. Things were far different in Australia where the brooding Total Control - which would later be covered by Tina Turner - took the band into the Top Ten. The following summer, the group - with Tim McGoverp replacing Jeff Jourard on guitar - issued its sophomore effort, Careful. Kicking off with the sax-fueled Danger, the album reflected a more self-assured feel and an even greater abundance of pop melodies than its predecessor. Stateside, Careful climbed into the Top Fifty and though it didn’t produce a hit single in the U.S., it wasn’t for a shortage of deserving candidates. Both the dreamy Bonjour Baby and the mid-tempo Days Are OK (But The Nights Were Made For Love) boasted choruses that would have sounded great on radio. In Los Angeles, the nascent New Wave movement might have been finding favor, but Middle America was a different story. It would be a couple more years and video on MTV before the rest of the country would catch up with The Motels and reward them with a Top Ten smash in Only The Lonely. And now, thirty years later, this collection allows music fans who might have missed out the chance to hear how The Motels got there.
