Marbled page edges and end papers, fine steel-engraved frontis of Lincoln posed standing, by Darby & Miller, with facsimile signature & tissue guard. Calling card of "The Secretary of State" laid in. XXX pp. Index, (1)-930 clean pp., light foxing to the frontis & title page. Good. Hardcover. Monaghan 881. "Reprints and translations of condolences, edited by John H. Haswell." This 1867 edition has about 200 more pages than that of the 1866 printing.The Resolution for printing "Additional copies of the Appendix to the Diplomatic Correspondence of 1865" indicates that sufficient copies were printed for Senators and members of the House of Representatives, and one copy each to any corporation or public body whose condolence is printed herein, with one hundred copies to be bound in full Turkey morocco, full gilt, and the remaining copies in half Turkey morocco, marble edged. This copy is one of the latter.The assassination of Abraham Lincoln spread quickly around the world, and letters of condolence came pouring in to Congress. This massive volume reprints each one, with an index according to country and organization. Many are from the United States itself. Expressions of grief and wonder, and accolades extolling the virtues and accomplishments of Lincoln, are plainly conveyed.
