Circa 1860 this is a true heirloom quality item, this is a very, very rare item indeed and no miniature Curling Stone Collection would be complete without it. The History of Canadian 'Iron' Curling Stones.Curling was brought to Canada from Scotland and some curling was played informally before 1800. The generally accepted story is that the 78th Fraser Highland Regiment melted cannonballs to make iron curling "stones" and that they curled at the city of Québec in 1759-1760. In the 1800s it was usual for male curlers in Quebec and Montreal to play with heavy ‘irons’ these could weigh 60 lbs (27 kg). Women's irons were smaller and weighed around 32 lbs (15 kg). Irons were the common 'stone' in Lower Canada. Clubs which played with stone stones were generally called 'Granite' clubs to distinguish them from the iron-players. It was as late as the 1940s that the iron players decided to let their irons rust and make common cause with the granite-players. ROBERTSON, JAMES, merchant and manufacturer; born 1831 in Campsie, Scotland. Born into a middle-class family, James Robertson studied at the parish school in Fintry, Scotland, and later at a private school. In 1843, at the age of 12, he began to learn the rudiments of business by working in a hardware store in Glasgow. He was hired in 1847 by Newton, Keats and Company as a clerk in their Glasgow branch office. It was not until 1857, a decade later, after many long years of work, that Robertson attained the rank of partner in the Glasgow firm of Alexander, Ferguson and Lonnie, which specialized in the manufacture of lead pipes. He was immediately put in charge of setting up an outlet at Montreal. On 27 June 1857 Robertson opened a warehouse under the corporate name of Canada Lead Pipe Works in that city on Rue Queen, in the heart of the industrial suburb of Sainte-Anne.
