Description: Silk University Lady Antique Postcard. EMB. Artist: Christy. PUBL: Illustrated This is a very nice postcard showing a PRETTY LADY dressed in a full bright red dress and hat, carrying a flag for the sports event at a UNIVERSITY. It has a "H", so it could represent Harvard. This postcard is ANTIQUE from the early 1900s. The postcard is also a NOVELTY postcard and it has SILK for the dress, hat and flag. The postcard is also ARTIST SIGNED by F. Earl Christy (1882–1961). He was a prolific American artist whose turn-of-the-century work often focused on the Ivy League college life, and showed well-dressed women who attended sports events. Historically, Christy was one of the leading artist who depicted the total beauty of the American Girl, especially of the college and university varieties. He helped start the tradition of glorifying the PRETTY LADIES of the era. These were the girls who attended football games or played sports. He first published in 1905 and worked for many publishers like Tuck & Sons, Illustrated, Reinthal & Newman, Knapp, etc. His work is highly sought after. Antique postcards by Christy sell in the $20-$25 range, and those with SILK get a premium up to $15 more. Postcards with SILK added to the postcard design were unique and sought after. Adding the silk would have been one of the last steps in making the postcard, and it was almost always done by hand. Because of the extra steps needed to make silk postcards, they only had a "short life". These are now collector items, and they are a pleasure to look at. This postcard will keep its value. The publisher of this postcard, Illustrated Postal Card (1904-14; New York, Berlin), was a major USA publisher of postcards and published in Germany (Leipzig, Saxony). Besides postcards, they also published fine art cards that were very popular. The company has a distinctive eagle trademark logo and is considered one of the “most wanted publishers” by collectors. They produced many beautifully embossed, heavy embossed (with an extra sheet on the back), air brushed, and glitter postcards. They were one of the most respected publishing houses during the “Golden Age of Postcards” (1908-1915 era). Overall, this is a very nice University antique silk postcard. This postcard is a collector item because of its age, the way it was made, and its overall appeal to Novelty as well as University Postcard collectors. The postcard is POSTED with a cancel date of 1927. However, it was actually published in the 1907 era. This postcard would have been "Printed in Germany". It has a DIVIDED back. This is a BETTER POSTCARD and good for a collector. The postcard will keep its value! It is sleeved and in good condition. However, please expect some creases, cuts, stains, paper toning, and edge wear due to its age (over 100 years old!). The photos show the postcard and its back. The postcard is shipped in a sturdy envelope. We only ship within the USA; we do not ship internationally. USA shipping is with tracking, and we use eBay Standard Envelope mail when the value is under $20 and the weight is under 3 oz; and, we use USPS Ground Advantage when the value is over $20 or the weight is over 3 oz.
