He excelled at designing, building, flying, writing and illustrating - free flight, control line, radio control and boats. He took photos for his articles and processed the photos himself, and his artwork has graced the covers of many model magazines over the years. Cal teamed with Frank Lashek - as he did on some other impressive scale projects - to design this model of a Navy long range patrol bomber. The Mercator was powered by two 3250 hp Pratt & Whitney 28-cylinder radial engines but those big nacelles also housed two Allison J33 turbojets which were primarily to be used for takeoff and combat. The long, shallow bomb bay offered great flexibility in payload. The finished model has a wingspan of 49-7/8" and (two) O&R .23 to .33 engines were recommended for power.
