Description: Original negative featuring Satchel Paige in his rookie year. 4 in. x 3 in. This is a particularly strong image of Paige. The uniform dates the image to 1948-1949. I believe that is Joe Tipton behind Paige on the bench. Tipton did catch Paige once during the 1948 season (Paige joined in July) before being traded to the White Sox prior to the 1949 season. Very few Americans in 1948 thought the caricature on Satchel Paige's sleeve patch was racist--unless they were Native Americans. The meaning of this photograph has changed dramatically with time. In 1948, it was probably seen in part as illustrating Paige's long-awaited triumph over baseball's racial segregation. It should still be seen that way today, but may also be seen as a reminder that the obvious sometimes go unseen. With another collector, I will be listing many of the most important vintage baseball photographs in existence. Taken together, this will constitute the most important offering of baseball photographs since the 1996 Christie's Baseball Magazine sale.
