Description: Romanian Model 59 Type II Transitional Model 6X4 Transitional with Leather Scabbard Serial #3844 Introduction There are four recognized bayonet types and three identified scabbard types from this series. In chronological order: The Model 47 Type I (also referred to as the Model 51), Model 59 Type I, Model 59 Type II/Early Model 74 Type III, and Model 74 Type III cover the bayonets; while the Model 47, Model 59/Model 74 Steel Type, and Model 59/Model 74 Plastic Type, describe the scabbards. Some collectors prefer the designation Type I, 6X3, 6X4 Transitional, 6X4, and 6X5 to differentiate these more definitively. The transitional phase bayonets are certainly interesting, as they only appeared in Egypt, Poland, and Romania. These feature a Model 59 Type II pommel with Type I scabbard. That makes them a type of hybrid that reflects the changes also taking place at the time for the rifles to which they attach. Background Although very similar to the Model 59 Type I bayonets from other countries, the Romania Model 59 Type II Transitional/6X4 Transitional, lacks the the bulbous plastic pommel, which is replaced by a squarish metal one. Redesign of the pommel was specifically done because the Type I versions had a tendency to crack in the field, especially around the lug channel area. The scabbard on the Model 59 Type II Transitional, in contrast, is virtually identical to the Model 59 Type I variation, with the same black-painted metal body and light-colored rubber insulator. The Romanians only manufactured one other bayonet variant of this series after these—and extremely few of those—so the 6X4 Transitional variation represents the last of a breed that was produced for the Romanian military. Description You are buying a Romanian Model 59 Type II (6X4) Transitional bayonet that is in very good overall condition. The set includes a natural leather full-size frog, keep, and wrist strap, all unique to Romania. The bayonet handle, pommel, and cross guard are relatively free of scratches with a blade that is bright. Their are no visible stamps on the metal components, except for the matching serial number of 3844 on both the bayonet crossguard and middle of the scabbard body. The Cugir Arsenal arrow-in-triangle along with a "3/1" is molded as a raised marking on the bayonet handle, which is typical for all of these bayonets.
