Barnes, published in 1925, is a seminal work that delves into the systematic study of both old and modern paintings. Barnes, an American scientist, art collector, and founder of The Barnes Foundation, aimed to highlight the essential features of various painting styles and techniques. The real first edition of this classic work by Albert C. Barnes. It "Represents an effort to set forth briefly the salient features of a systematic study of both old and modern paintings. The experience has developed a method that has been in use for more than ten years, with results so encouraging that a plan embodying it has been installed as a part of the course in Fine Arts at the University of Pennsylvania." (preface). The Art in Painting was privately published by the Barnes Foundation Press in a first edition of 1,000 copies and predates the Harcourt Brace & Co. first edition that was published in 1926. It has since been revised and reprinted. Also included is a 4-page pamphlet from the Barnes Foundation for this and other books published by the Barnes Foundation Press (see photo)
