Purvis Young (February 4, 1943 – April 20, 2010) was an American Artist from Overtown in Miami, Florida. He is know for his use of “Found Objects” to create his own canvas, and his works areoften a blend of collage, drawing, painting & self made frames. Much of his artworkreflects the struggles & experiences of African Americans living in the south. Purvis gained recognition as a contemporary self-taught outsider artist, with collectors' such as Jane Fonda, Damon Wayans, Jim Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, among many others. His work is featured in the book set “Souls Grown Deep”, and was part of the 1996 Atlanta Olympics “Cultural Olympiad”. In 2006 a feature documentary entitled “Purvis of Overtown” was produced about his Life and Work. He was inducted into the Florida Artists Hall of Fame, and his work is found in the collections of the American Folk Art Museum, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the High Museum of Art, the National Museum of African American History and Culture, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, among others.
