Description: A prehistoric animal effigy vessel produced by members of the Mochicha culture of northern Peru. The Moche civilization existed from approximately 100 AD until its collapse in roughly 750 AD. Some experts believe that the Moche lacked centralized power and were instead a group of independent settlements united by a shared culture. This piece once belonged to an arts museum. Of course, we can't be sure what animal is depicted, though it may most closely resemble some kind of feline. The vessel features a handle as well as an upward facing opening. The handle is adorned with thick painted bands while a larger singular band circles the area beneath the effigy and the spout. The vessel is about 6.7" tall, 7.5" long and 6.8" wide.
