Description: WA-KAWN, A WINNEBAGO CHIEF No. 83 RICE, RUTTER & CO Publishers This image from Vol. II of the 1872 Octavo edition will also include the biography pages from the text. WAKAWN, the Snake, was a war-chief of the Winnebagoes. He is portrayed in traditional costume with a bare chest with a variety of neck ornaments and arm bands with a cloth drape around his abdomen. His hair is pulled back and accented with feathers and he is wearing a painted snake on his face. There is some age related toning and a little staining in the lower right corner, with a couple of small spots above the image. Please refer to photos for more details on the condition. Hand colored lithograph color plates were by Henry Inman based on paintings by Charles Bird King, James Otto Lewis, and Peter Rindisbacher. Most of the original paintings were destroyed in a fire and the Henry Inman lithographs preserve the images.
