Description: TOOAN-TUH, A CHEROKEE CHIEF No. 72 RICE, RUTTER & CO Publishers This image from Vol. II of the 1872 Octavo edition will also include the biography pages from the text. TOOAN-TUH, also referred to as Spring Frog, was known for his elasticity and vigor until old age. His portrait shows a costume with a light blue fringed jacket over a ruffled shirt and a colorful belt tied at the waist or hips. He has a colorful head cloth wrapped around his hair. This color plate is in really nice condition with very minor toning and one spot on the left edge and a smudge in the lower right corner. The image has nice colors. Hand colored lithograph color plates were by Henry Inman based on paintings by Charles Bird King, James Otto Lewis, and Peter Rindisbacher. Most of the original paintings were destroyed in a fire and the Henry Inman lithographs preserve the images. This image is from the 1872 octavo edition of: HISTORY OF THE INDIAN TRIBES OF NORTH AMERICA WITH BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES AND ANECDOTES OF THE PRINCIPAL CHIEFS EMBELLISHED WITH One Hundred Portraits from the Indian Gallery IN THE WAR DEPARTMENT AT WASHINGTON BY THOMAS L. McKENNEY, Late of the Indian Department, Washington, In Two Volumes VOL. II PHILADELPHIA: PUBLISHED BY D.
