Description: This painting/drawing (in its original gilt frame) is by the famous American artist Peggy Bacon. It was created 10 years before she died, while she was living in Cape Porpoise, Maine. I acquired it in an auction in Rockport, Maine last summer. The work was done in watercolor and gouache, over-drawn with ink pen. It's alive with texture and detail surrounding a mysterious black cat, silently reclining in a tree. The tuxedo cat has bi-color eyes-- yellow and blue, and it stands out in a world of pink and blue, defined by Bacon's energetic ink drawing. FRAMED SIZE: 25.5" X 33.25" CONDITION: The painting is behind glass and is in excellent condition with no damage or stains, but the frame shows its age with some soil on the linen cloth filet. No attempt has been made at cleaning this. The finish on the wooden frame is "distressed" gold and there is some wear to the wood and gilding, mainly at the corners. (shown) Works by Margaret Frances Bacon (American, 1895 – 1987) are held in the collections of New York's Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Art Institute of Chicago. Her drawings have appeared in publications such as The New Yorker and Vanity Fair, as well as in shows in major art galleries. Bacon earned many awards, including the Guggenheim Fellowship for creative work in the graphic arts. Although she trained as a painter at the renowned Art Students League of New York, she found her greatest fame with her satirical prints and drawings. At the age of 24, she wrote and illustrated her first book, "The True Philosopher and Other Cat Tales," and she went on to illustrate over 60 more books, 19 of which she also wrote. Her successful mystery book "The Inward Eye" was nominated for an Edgar Allan Poe Award in 1952 for best novel. As a Guggenheim Fellow, she completed 35 satirical portraits of art world figures for a collection called "Off With Their Heads!" which was published by Robert M. McBride & Company. She was granted an award and a gold medal from the American Academy of Arts and Letters for her lifelong contribution to illustration and graphic art, and she was elected into the National Academy of Design. She was a member of the Society of American Graphic Artists and participated in many of their annual exhibitions. In 1975, the National Collection of Fine Arts (now the Smithsonian American Art Museum) honored Bacon with a yearlong retrospective exhibition titled, "Peggy Bacon: Personalities and Places." It was In the 1970s that Bacon went to live in Cape Porpoise, Maine. She died in 1987 at the age of 91 in Kennebunk, Maine. (edited from a full biography on Wikipedia) Weighs 11 lbs.
