The fossilisation process of any living creature takes many millions of years. During this time, the creature's (skeletal) remains cross over from the animal kingdom to the domain of the mineral kingdom. Ammonites may become stone, such as agate or quartz, or they may become metal such as iron pyrite or hematite. Wood too crosses to the mineral kingdom during fossilisation, it keeps its grainy appearance but the wood has now petrified...it has turned into stone. Fossilised wood is quite rare because normally, when wood dies, it rots down to compost and fossilised compost is of course, coal. This wood was preserved, buried in ash from a huge volcanic eruption.
