Their goal was to drive across Soviet territory to reach the White Sea coast at Kandalaksha, cutting the vital rail line to Murmansk and isolating that vital Artic Ocean port from the rest of the Soviet Union. Opposing them were three Soviet division. These troops would make their stand in the Salla region, an area annexed by the Soviet Union only a year before, to protect their country's only year-round supply line to the United States and Great Britain.
