Description: Original Hand Written Document. A Deed, 1779. Property Sale for 150 Pounds fromBartholomew French to Joshua Beal. Both of Athol, Massachusetts Bay Colony. There's quite a bit of info on Bartholomew French on the internet but I could find nothing on Joshua Beal. French was born in 1752 so was 27 years old when he sold the property in 1779. I suspect it was he that wrote out the deed. Two years later, he joined the military (Continental Army) and may well have fought in the Revolutionary War. He married in 1777. He fathered four children before entering the war, and another ten following his discharge in 1784! There were two Joshua Beals in Athol around the time of this deed, father and son, but their dates don't add up. The father died in 1777, prior to the deed, and his son, also Joshua, was born in 1774 ... so he would have been five at the time of the deed. If you're a history buff, you should take the time to read the history of Athol, Ma. There's a fantastic detailed account on the internet. I've never read such an amazing account of the struggle of early settlers trying to carve out a living and to build a community while battling local indians and the several wars which engulfed them during the 17th. and 18th. centuries. A mixture of tragedy and heroism. It's what this country is all about. The deed is written on two sides of a folded sheet of paper, 17" x 13". (each side 8-1/2" x 13") The paper is 'time toned' to a light tan. The dark brown ink is quite strong (considering it's 245 years old ... ten years before Washington became President), but it's not easy to read. The document was once folded and the old fold lines are quite weak. No separations to the fold lines but careful handling is required. In the pics above, pics 1 and 2 show one side ... 3 and 4 the other. (Document is a little too long for my scanner so I took 2 scans of each side) ______________________________Inv. No. 1937
