Description: Original copperplate engraved portrait of a native from Mangaia, the most southerly of the Cook Islands in the South Pacific Ocean. It shows a man with top-knot hair and an ear pierced with a large bone. The portrait was drawn by John Webber, who served as artist on Captain James Cook's third voyage of discovery. It is titled in the lower margin "Man of Mangeea" and was published in the 1784 English publication of Cook's third Voyage. The image area measures 23 x 17.7 cm [9" x 7"] on a larger sheet, with generous margins on all sides. Condition: The image area is in very fine condition, a bold, crisp, and clean impression. The outer edges of the sheet have toned slightly. It is blank on the back, with no printing on the reverse side. Please see the scans and feel free to ask any questions. It is an original, authentic copperplate engraving, not a reproduction or modern reprint, and it is fully guaranteed to be genuine. Buy with confidence!
