Description: Here is an exceptional original pen and ink drawing by John Marin. It is impossible to convey the depth of ethereal quality that this drawing exudes with actually seeing it. It is a fairly early work for Marin as it was done on a trip to london around the turn of the 20thC. This is before he completed the most popular time of his career, the New York period. I have always been a fan of Marin’s and the simplicity of the line in his work. He always managed to evoke much spirit while leaving a lot of the assumptions to the viewer. One of the things that is most endearing about his New York works is how he pulls the height of the buildings into the work by tilting them towards each other. That alone creates an atmosphere that wouldnt otherwise be there. I feel that this trip to London, and in this particular work may be where he got the inkling for this. The focal point of this work is obviously the acute point of the buildings, which is also where they are darkest. The dark is funneled down from the charcoal sky so that everywhere you look, it points you to the crux of the buildings. The buildings tilt slightly towards each other, intensifying the effect. It’s a great idea and works beautifully. These buildings make appearances in other works, however, I have been unable to locate an exact print of this work. Signed lower right. It must have been an inspirational place for him. The sheet is in excellent condition and measures 29 x 20 cm. It is housed in a 4 ply rag overthrow museum mount. The drawing was acquired directly from the artist. If you would like additional photos or information, simply ask. Shipping is standard overnight for lower 48. Ebay handles international shipments
