Description: Here is a spectacular original drawing by James Mcneill Whistler. It is finished on a sheet of 18thC laid paper with the "3 Crescents" watermark, his favorite paper. He drew on these sheets and produced prints as well, believing that the older paper took ink much more thoroughly than the modern sheets did. Important to note because Whistler was known for his flat, even tonality. He often said that was an important part of the allure of his work and he credited the antique paper for much of that evenness. The sheet measures 30 x 21 cm. This work appears to be from one of his trips to Venice, which he made in the later 1800’s. Given that assumption, I have researched this piece but have not seen it published. Given that the sheet is prepared with some type of ink and pigment, I assume that this was done for atmospheric purposes. This is EXACTLY what goes through my mind first when I look at this drawing, it appears to be, not only antique, but from a wholly surreal place. Studies show that there is oak gall ink, black ink, gall wash, black chalk, and litho crayon on it’s face. Signed with his butterfly mark lower right/center. The entire drawing has been highly burnished, which in my opinion, is what gives it’s depth. Depth is another good word to describe this work. Everything is obviously on a single plane, however, everything appears to be on various planes as well. Something akin to a well arranged piece of music with many instruments…everything has it’s place. It is housed in a 4-ply rag overthrow museum board mount. Having spent time with this work and other works, it becomes obvious why great, master artists are exactly that…they are masters of their craft. The drawing was acquired directly from the artist around the turn of last century. These are fairly simple photos. If more, or others are needed, simply ask.
