Description: Here is a drawing by Raphael Sanzio, known as “Raphael”. It is also associated with a historical family provenance, the “Viti-Antaldi” collection. This family is descended from Timoteo Viti, the well known painter of the renaissance. This is a relatively diminutive sketch, measuring 16.5 x 20.5 cm. The sheet is comparable to other known works by Raphael in that it has many of the same attributes. Such as the wool furrows which are fairly common in very old paper. It makes for a fascinating journey through papermaking looking at these traits. If you view the sheet at a raking angle to view them you can also see incisions in the sheet made by a blind stylus. Raphael and other renaissance artists would use this technique to outline a drawing and then go back into it with chalk or pen and make it more visible. It is unclear to me what specific work this was preparatory for, if any, but is a very typical Raphael sketch in a very clear hand. As can be seen, looking at it carefully, there is a pentimento, or change, behind the woman depicted, or….it is simply drawn over it. Please let me know of any requests for further information or photos that may help. A concise, simple work from one of the greats. *************Shipping is based on overnight delivery in the contiguous states. Worldwide will be more to the places that I ship to. PLEASE ENQUIRE PRIOR TO PURCHASE********** PROVENANCE: The small mark RV (Raphael Urbino, as he was called) in LR of the sheet is that of the Viti-Antaldi family (L. 2445). As I had mentioned, they had acquired, by descent, the studio and collection of Timoteo Viti. Not only was Viti a great artist in his own right, he was also a very good friend of Raphael, and to a degree, Raphael was a bit of a mentor, even though Viti was somewhat older. It was obvious to Viti and everyone really, that Raphael was a standout and much could be learned by just about anyone. Anyway, into the latter half of the 17thC, this trove of serious drawings became known. The great collector Pierre Crozat was the first to approach and hand picked many of the super choice works for himself. Over the next many years, it was picked and picked until Samuel Woodburn came and picked up the last of them. The provenance declension would be thus: Viti-Antaldi Family Collection; Samuel Woodburn; Thomas Phillipps; Thomas Fitzroy Fenwick; Private sale 1942
