Reflecting personally on the saint: Saint Hemma of Gurk was a noblewoman turned nun, who is venerated as one of the most significant saints in Austrian history. Born around 980 AD into the noble family of Friesach-Zeltschach, Hemma was a wealthy widow who became known for her deep piety and charity. After the deaths of her husband, William of Friesach, and her two sons, who were murdered in 1043, Hemma decided to dedicate the remainder of her life to the Church and to charitable works. With her considerable fortune, she founded two significant religious institutions in Carinthia, Austria: the Benedictine double monastery of Gurk in 1043, and later the Benedictine monastery of Admont in 1074, which is now one of the oldest surviving monasteries in Austria. Hemma's dedication to the Church and her foundation of these monasteries were driven by her desire to ensure prayers for the eternal rest of her family. She entered the convent at Gurk herself, living her final years in religious devotion. Hemma of Gurk died on June 27, 1045, and was buried in the crypt of Gurk Cathedral. She was canonized in 1938 by Pope Pius XI. Her feast day is celebrated on June 29th. Saint Hemma is particularly revered in Carinthia, where she is considered a patron saint, and she is often invoked for matters involving eyesight and family protection.
