Like tyrannosaur teeth, the teeth of mosasaurs can be hard to pin down to a specific genus or species due to the extreme similarities in the appearance of their teeth. This tooth could be from a Prognathodon, Halisaurus, Eremiasaurus, Platecarpus, or Mosasaurus species. Mosasaurs are an extinct group of marine reptiles that lived during the Cretaceous period, from about 101 to 64.9 million years ago. Their appearance was like a combination of a whale and a lizard. Despite popular belief, they were not dinosaurs - no known dinosaurs were truly fully aquatic. They were, however, contemporary with dinosaurs, dying out along with them in the KT extinction. Mosasaurs ranged in size from about 3 feet in length to as much as 56 feet, with large mosasaurs being more common than their more diminutive counterparts. Mosasaurs had a worldwide range, and preyed upon fish, ammonites, molluscs, seabirds, and sharks. The closest living relatives to mosasaurs are monitor lizards.
