Description: AVIATION Border War / WWI Real Photo Postcard Plane U.S. Army Aviation Post San Antonio TX Kelly Field April 1917 The first use of U.S. Army airplanes in combat took place on March 13, 1916, when the 1st Aero Squadron departed Fort Sam Houston for service into Mexico. They flew the first reconnaissance sortie on March 16th then deployed into Mexico three days later. On April, 1917, one day before the U.S. entered World War I, four aircraft departed the aviation post at Ft Sam Houston and formed up with their noses pointed southwest. In the planes were Cpt’s Carl Spatz, Davidson, Spotts and Lt Bagnell. Eddie Stinson (the only civilian pilot) led the formation to the site that Maj Foulois had selected to be the new flying field.
