A hymn sequence for Harvest Festivals opening witha buoyant setting for full choir of “Come ye thankful people come” which is contrastedby the smoothness of “The King of love my Shepherd is.” A mezzo-soprano solo con-tinues this peaceful mood leading into a reiteration of the beginning with a majesticcounter subject of the “Old 100th”.MORNING OF THE DAY OF DAYS an Easter cantata for soprano, tenor, choir andorgan. The tenor voice tells the story during which the solo soprano sings a livelymelody with the chorus. The tenor resumes by announcing the resurrection which thechorus takes up in a syncopated song of joy. The hymn “Love’s redeeming work isdone” follows on, leading to a triumphal setting to “Thou hallowed chosen morn ofpraise.”LET THEM GIVE THANKS for mixed chorus, unison voices and organ was com-missioned for the Diocesan Festival in Canterbury Cathedral 1962.THE HYMNS are settings to words from various sources. “Jesu, Lover of my soul,”here treated canonically is one of Charles Wesley’s most famous hymns. The EasterCarol, “Ye choirs of new Jerusalem” is set to a translation of words by St. Fulbert(11th Century).JOHN ALLDIS formed his choir in 1962 when it first presented its widely contrastedprogrammes of contemporary music. Under his direction the choir now holds a dis-tinguished position in London musical life, where it has appeared at the B.B.C. Invita-tion Concerts, the Henry Wood Promenade Concerts, the Wigmore Hall, for theSociety for the Promotion of New Music and the Institute of Contemporary Arts.John Alldis has trained choruses for the B.B.C., Sadler’s Wells, the PhilharmoniaConcerts Society and is now Chorus—Director of the London Philharmonic Choir.LOUIS HALSEY was a choral scholar at King’s College, Cambridge, under Dr. BorisOrd, from 1949 to 1953. On leaving Cambridge he founded the Elizabethan Singers,a mixed choir of around thirty members, and has specialised in the performance ofmusic of the 16th, 17th and 20th centuries. The choir has given frequent broadcastsand London concerts, and has made many records. Since 1963 Louis Halsey has beenon the Music Stafr or the B.B.C.MALCOLM WILLIAMSON was born in Sydney, Australia in 1931. At the age ofeleven 'he entered the Sydney Conservatoire to study the piano and French hom, andalso composition under Sir Eugene Goosens. In 1953 he came to London to continuehis composition studies under Elizabeth Lutyens and Erwin Stein.For some long time, Williamson has been continuously occupied with major com-missions, including operas for Sadler’s Wells, and the Aldeburgh Festival, the balletTHE DISPLAY written with Sir Robert Helpmann and performed in over 50 countries,and orchestral works for the 1965 Season and the 1965 Edinburgh and Bath Festivalsand the B.B.C. Promenade Concerts. The two commissioned children’s operas THEHAPPY PRINCE and JULIUS CAESAR JONES have already scored great successesin many places, and have been recorded. Among his other operas are the highly success-ful OUR MAN IN HAVANA (1963). THE VIOLINS OF ST. JACQUES, premieredby Sadler’s Wells in 1966 and revived for three successive seasons, DUNSTAN ANDTHE DEVIL (1967) and the chamber opera THE GROWING CASTLE based onStrindberg’s DREAM PLAY, already performed in a number of countries.Williamson’s larger orchestral works include his SYMPHONY NO. 2 (a Bourne-mouth Symphony Orchestra commission), three piano concerti, and concerti for violinand organ. He also has a number of chamber and keyboard works to his credit, in-cluding organ pieces such as the EPITAPHS FOR EDITH SITWELL and VISIONOF CHRIST PHOENIX, which form part of his repertoire as an international organrecitalist.His special gift for vocal writing is shown not only in his operas, but also in suchworks as THE BRILLIANT AND THE DARK, an operatic sequence for women’svoices commissioned by the National Federation of Women’s Institutes, and SYM-PHONY FOR VOICES, an unaccompanied S A T B setting of five poems by JamesMcAuley. There are also several songcycles, including FROM A CHILD’S GARDENto R. L. Stevenson’s poems and SIX ENGLISH LYRICS.Williamson’s output of religious music >‘s considerable, ranging from the delicate set-ting of CHRIST WHOSE GLORY to the strident EASTER CAROL recorded here.
