Description: Leaves of GrassBy Walt Whitman1860 Boston, Thayer & EldridgeYear 85 of the States(1860-61) This is the real 3rd edition(1860), not the later illegal reprint by Worthington in the 1880s. In my opinion it is the best edition of Leaves of Grass, as I read that Whitman got to set all the print, pick all the fonts, as he was in charge of the production of this book. It shows by how artistic it is. It is a big and sturdy book, and a total pleasure to read. This masterpiece will give for a lifetime and be a complete treasure to a Whitman fan or anyone who loves literature or poetry. It is his magnum opus and is a great entry level copy! Boston: Thayer and Eldridge, Year 85 of the States (1860-1861). 8vo, 456 pp. Original orange wavy-ribbed cloth, spine lettered & pictorially decorated in gilt, covers blind stamped. Cloth rubbed, ends and corners worn. Inner hinges are both cracked and spine is loose, but still holding. A good unrestored copy. § Third edition (first trade edition), first printing, first state of the frontispiece, binding B, per BAL 21397. BAL's binding A consisted of wrappers found only on advance copies. Although no name appears on the title page, Whitman's name is on the copyright page and his portrait is the frontispiece. This is the highly significant first commercial edition of Leaves of Grass following the two editions self-published by Whitman. For this edition the book was dramatically expanded with over 100 poems, including the first appearance of the "Calamus" cluster. A beautiful opportunity to get an amazing copy of a fantastic book… Peaceful journey to All…
