Description: Name: Bothriolepis canadensis (Armored Fish) Age: Upper Devonian Formation: Escuminac Formation Location: Escuminac Bay, Quebec, Canada Size: Fish is 3.3 inches long, 4.2" across the fins!We recently acquired some nice fossils from the late Joseph Butterfield Collection (NJ). We will be auctioning these fossils here over the next few weeks. This is a fabulous example of a classic fossil fish. It is a large Bothriolepis canadensis from Quebec, Canada. This textbook specimen was found in the 1960's, and acquired from a major fossil collection. Bothriolepis, or ''pitted scale'', was a bottom-dwelling armored fish from the Devonian. The head and pectoral fins were covered with highly-ornamented armor plates, but the trunk and tail were naked to the elements (see illustration). This impressive specimen has the pustulated cephalic armor well preserved and easily seen. The armored pectoral fins are beautifully articulated and symmetrically splayed. The entire highly ornamented fossil is extremely well preserved and exhibits amazing detail - even some of sharp spines on the pectoral fins are intact, which is quite unusual. The ancient fish is wonderfully showcased on the large, unbroken limestone block. This is a very displayable and extremely collectible example of this primitive Devonian fish that was found decades ago and recently acquired from a major collection.A Certificate of Authenticity from EXTINCTIONS.com is included with this specimen.
