Its popularity peaked sometime around the Song dynasty in China, then waned in the Ming dynasty. Fortunately, the tradition was carried on in Japan and Korea for many years after. Although Jianzhan glazes are all basically the same, due to different firing temperatures and positioning within the kiln, each cup's fired glazing pattern becomes totally unique from any other.
