Mr. Gilpin read law with his father for preceptor and was admitted to practice as an attorney in the District Court of Philadelphia , on December 1 , 1874 , and in the Supreme Court of the State of Pennsylvania on January 15, 1877. On November 12 , 1875 , he was appointed Assistant United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania and continued to hold that position until he resigned it on January 14 , 1885 . On January 1 , 1890, he was elected a School Director of the Eighth School Section of Philadelphia , and, on April 6 , 1896 , was elected President of the Board of Directors of the same section.
