Description: Cabinet photo of the famous English actor Sir Henry Irving. The photo dates circa 1880's. The mat measures 6 7/16 inches by 4 3/16 inches. The back has an old inked inscription "(Sir) Henry Irving (Harold Seton Collection)". The left border of the mat at the 10 o'clock position has a chip. There is a light crease 1/2 inch in from the top left corner. There is a minor wrinkle at 8 o'clock position just up from the left bottom corner. This shows a bit more on the back than it does on the front. There is some wear & minor toning along the edges of the mat. Sir Henry Irving was born on 6 February 1838 & died on 13 October 1905. He was born with the name John Henry Brodribb. Irving was an English stage actor in the Victorian era, known as an actor-manager because he took complete responsibility such as supervision of sets, lighting, direction, casting, as well as playing the leading roles for many seasons at the Lyceum Theatre He established himself and his company as representative of English classical theatre. Known as "The Governor" to those under his supervision at the Lyceum, he was the first actor to be awarded a knighthood. Irving is thought to have been the inspiration for the title character in Lyceum manager Bram Stoker's 1897 novel Dracula. Harold Seton who had collected this photo was a well known author & journalist who was very interested in high society & the theatre. He wrote a column for the Theatre Magazine that was titled Theatre Thoughts. He also wrote for Town Topics: The Journal of Society. Seton was well versed in gossip of the high society of the Newport, Rhode Island area. Seton performed as an actor in 8 plays that took place between 1919-1935. Seton was also well known as a collector of early photos of actors & actresses. Over a number of decades of collecting he accumulated more than 10,000 theatrically related photographs. Portions of his collection, which Seton donated, reside in The New York Historical Society, the Folger Shakespeare Library of Washington, D. C., & Wake Forest University, as well as numerous other institutions. The reference number for this item is #5098.
