Description: Graves Light Station Graves Island Outer Boston Harbor, Massachusetts ----------------------------------------------------- The Graves Light is a lighthouse composed of granite block, located on The Graves, the outermost island of the Boston Harbor Islands nine miles offshore of Boston, MA. The Graves is a dangerous group of rocks named by Governor Winthrop in 1653 after Rear Admiral Thomas Graves of the English Navy who used to bring settlers to Boston. The lighthouse, which was built in 1905, is 118 feet tall and was originally lit with a whale oil lantern. Today that lantern is at the Smithsonian Museum and the light and foghorn have been solar powered since 2001. In 1939 the United States Coast Guard (USCG) took over the operation of Graves Light and did so until 2013. By that time, the lighthouse which had survived many storms including the “Perfect Storm” of 1991, had deteriorated and become too expensive for the USCG to maintain. It was then auctioned off as government surplus and purchased by a Massachusetts family. The ambitious family completely renovated the lighthouse using repurposed building materials from the early 20th Century to create a beautiful and authentic, habitable restoration. As part of the terms of its sale, the lighthouse is in continued use as an important navigation aid for traffic to and from Boston Harbor. Graves Light Station was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987. Nautical chart art print of Graves Light Station on Graves Island, Boston Outer Harbor, Boston, MA. MacGregor, Jr. was born in Medfield, MA, the son and grandson of Norfolk Hunt Club kennel masters. Many of his family members were self taught artists, woodcarvers, automobile mechanics and veterans of foreign wars including his father a WW1 US Army veteran. Bill is a graduate of Medfield High School, Wentworth Institute, and Northeastern University. His engineering career, from which he is now retired, included working for military and aerospace companies in industrial engineering and IR optics. His painting incorporates “old skool” mechanical and civil drafting tools and he uses a mixed medium of watercolors, acrylics and inks. Two rabbits are often in quite a few of his paintings. Look for them. He is frequently commissioned by United States Naval officers to create paintings of their ships and aircraft carriers on nautical charts. In May, 2018, and for one year, four of Bill’s automotive related paintings were on display at the Larz Anderson Auto Museum in Brookline, MA
