Description: Listed for auction is a stunning autographed framed display which contain the authenticated [DS] document signed by Robert E. Lee. General Lee commanded the Army of Northern Virginia from 1862 until its surrender in April of 1865. In 1865, Robert E. Lee was appointed as president of Washington College [later Washington and Lee University] in Lexington, Virginia. During his tenure as president from 1865 until his death in 1870, Lee supported reconciliation between North and South and is largely considered by both Confederate and Union officers as one of the Civil War's greatest generals. The display is centered around a striking color image of general Robert E. Lee. The photograph is a quality color image [8.00 x 10.00] and the original image was taken by photographer Matthew Brady in 1865. Mounted below is the [DS] document signed by Robert E. Lee. The document was signed by Lee when he served as an engineer for certifying work completed on the Mississippi River. The document measures 8.00 x 2.50 inches and is in fine condition and is boldly signed in a dip pen. The signature has been authenticated by JSA Authentication Services and will be accompanied with the above Letter of Authenticity. The last item is a professionally engraved plaque which reads as follows, ''Robert E. Lee. January 19, 1807 - October 12, 1870 - A son of a Revolutionary War officer, Lee was a top graduate of the United States Military Academy and an exceptional officer and military engineer in the United States Army. During his 32 years of service, he served throughout the United Sates and distinguished himself during the Mexican-American War. During the opening of the American Civil War, Lee chose to follow his home state of Virginia and commanded the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia from 1862 until its surrender in 1865. In 1865, Lee was appointed as the president of Washington Colledge, later named Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virgina and served until his death in 1870. The display has been professionally double matted in a dark green linen outer matte which has been accented with a silver inner matte and completed with a gold wood fillet around each item within the display. The display has been completed in a quality ornate gold wood frame to the dimensions of 28.00 x 16.00 inches.
