Glasses Used in Serving Cocktails are defined. A section entitled “The Value of Rum” declares “Rum is the most potent stimulant for the heart of all spirits. Rum and milk in the morning is always a fine restorative, and works like magic on cough and chest troubles.“ Also included is some rum-related trivia: the 1752 British Navy allowed half a pint of rum, a pint of wine or a gallon of beer; the distillation of sugar cane originated in the Far East; rum was referred to in England as “comfortable waters”; and Revolutionary War armies were provided with New England rum “which would make a rabbit bite a bull-dog.”. Literary references are cited as well. Trinidadian Joseph Bento Fernandes (1903-1992) inherited the Rum business from his Madeiran father, and established a reputation for the consistency and integrity of his rum blends such as White Star, adding Black Label Rum in the mid-1920’s. In 1930, the business accelerated when Bento bought stocks of 1919 distilled rum from a government warehouse fire sale, creating the classic “1919 Old Rum.”When the original stock ran out, the rum’s name was changed to Fernandes Vat 19, a highly successful brand. Bento then purchased a sugar factory in 1933, experimented with distilling and in the 1940s, incorporated Fernandes Distillers LTD at a time of increased American economic presence in Trinidad due to the opening of a Navy base at Chaguaramas. During World War II, Bento Fernandes supplied Trinidian servicemen with a monthly one bottle ration of Fernandes Vat 19 and earned a commendation from the Royal Air Force.
