ABOUT FARWELL, OZMUN, KIRK & COMPANY꞉ The Farwell, Ozmun, Kirk and Company was one of the country's largest, wholesale hardware companies in the United States. Located at 213, 215, 217, 219, 221 & 223 East Third Street, Saint Paul, Minnesota, today, these addresses are associated with a vacant lot at the intersection of Ramsey Street. In 1895, the company need a little more space and opened a warehouse at 300 Broadway. Still growing, in 1911, Farwell, Ozmun, Kirk and Company needed an even more space and commenced construction on “Warehouse #2,” a large, six-story building at 100 West Water Street. Google shows the Warehouse #2 (located only 740-feet from the Mississippi River) in their June 2019 Street View (from Water Street) and June 2016 Street View (from the bike trail along the river). Current satellite images show a large white building shoehorned-in between Warehouse #2 and West Water Street. We also found mention of a warehouse at 160 E. Kellogg Blvd. As the company grew, it needed more and more and more manufacturing and storage space. As the company expanded, so did their inventory. Some of their catalogs exceeded 3,000 pages! Farwell, Ozmun, Kirk and Company's close proximity to the Mississippi River and numerous railroads assisted in its rapid and considerable growth. Manufacturers and distributors could easily transport new materials and inventory to the company's warehouses and those same freight carriers permitted the company to ship their customers' orders across the country. Between 1880 (41,473) and 1890 (133,156) Saint Paul's population exploded - - more than tripling. All of those new residents needed housing and jobs which meant even more construction requiring even more hardware. Sales accelerated both locally and nationally. Established in 1859 and incorporated in 1887, we're not sure when Farewell, Ozmun, Kirk & Company closed. We know they were still issuing stock in their company as of March 5, 1949; That in 1956 they were entangled in a Supreme Court of Minnesota case (John Duke v. Farewell, Ozmun, Kirk & Co.) regarding a Plaintiff walking into a glass panel which was part of an entrance into the company's building on June 22, 1950). During our research, we came across a caption under a photograph that mentioned "...the reason for the change from "OK" to "Trustworthy" is that Farwell, Ozmun, Kirk & Company (OK Hardware) announced to its dealers in January 1985 that OK Hardware dealers would be affiliated with the nationwide family of Trustworthy Hardware & Home Center Dealers...” We checked the Minnesota Secretary of State's data base - nothing, not even a mention of the company. Interestingly, we did come across the company's name in the Wyoming Secretary of State's data base - indicating the company is inactive, revoked due to a tax issue as of March 11, 1993. ABOUT THE ISDELL MERCANTILE COMPANY꞉ The Isdell Mercantile Company building still stands today in the ghost town of Pony, Montana. At one time, the company employed fourteen clerks. It was built of stone in 1880 and at one time, housed a school, the town's post office and accommodated town meetings. The Isdell Mercantile Company was created in 1869 by N. J. Isdell in the town of Pony, Montana. Once called the "metropolis of the Madison Valley" by the "Madisonian," Pony was a boom town created by major quartz discoveries in 1875. The mercantile was incorporated in 1892. By 1900, the town had a schoolhouse, bank, newspaper, hotels, and several saloons. This growth, made possible by wealth from local mining operations, allowed the small mercantile to prosper. The Isdell Mercantile Company provided hardware, mining supplies, and various dry goods to the community. The mercantile went out of business when the quartz mining was halted in the Pony area. By the 1940s, the town was completely abandoned. SHIPPING COST꞉ Your shipping cost is calculated when checking out.
