KENNEY - TYPED LETTER SIGNED 01/21/1938 - HFSID 140245 EDWARD A. KENNEY The New Jersey Congressman accepts invitation, signs name in black ink only six days before his mysterious death! Very rare! Typed letter signed: "Edward A. Kenney" in black ink. 1 page, 8x7. Written on personal U.S. House of Representatives letterhead. Washington, D.C. January 21, 1938. Addressed to Mr. Joseph Paul Kelly, President of the New Jersey State Society. In full: "I have your kind invitation to attend the Congressional reception of the New Jersey State Society being held in the Rose Room of the Washington Hotel on the evening of February 16 and I wish to thank you for your thoughtfulness and am looking forward to being with you. Sincerely yours". Edward A. Kenney (1884-1938) was a member of the United States House of Representatives from 1933 until 1938, representing New Jersey. Kenney grew up in Massachusetts before establishing his law career in New York City in 1908, eventually moving his practice to Cliffside Park, New Jersey. From there he worked as a member of the legal advisory draft board of New Jersey during WWI; he began his pursuit of office after the war, running unsuccessfully for Mayor in 1921, 1923 and 1927. While serving as a Member of Congress, Kenney died at the Carlton Hotel in Washington D.C. after falling out of a window; there has been a great mystery surrounding his death which took place under unusual circumstances, and his political involvement instigated rumors that his death had been the result of foul play.
